Various Artists, Calypsoul 70: Carribean Soul 1969-1970

Following Nigeria 70, Strut records grow to the Caribbean for Calypsoul 70, a digest of calypso, reggae, latin, afro and soul styles from the 1970s. This is a tremendously exciting compilation that makes so many new connections and uncovers so many rarities that it amounts to a tote up re-education in 1970s Caribbean music. Crucially, though, it never forgets to be fun, and best of all, there's loads of it.

Focusing on a time when soul, funk, and disco divine Caribbean musicians to make powerful new fusions, the album never falls into a dry, scholarly coming by cataloguing work by style or origin, just plays like a bully party place from the start. The Revolution Of St Vincent's The Little You Say and The Rolling Tones' It's a Feeling set the climate, combining fairy-slipper with wind funk to startlingly original conclusions. Not all of the influences here are musical, however, and the importance of black exponent on many of the track is another revelation, from 'rapso' pioneer, Lancelot Layne, to the soul reggae of Tyrone Taylor. The keynote track here, though, has to be Biosis Now's Independent Bahamas. Neither are African golf links forgotten, thanks to the afrobeat-inspired Freedom In Africa.

Social commentary and political pleas are only one constituent of this compilation, though. Check out the awesome Trinidad steel pan plow of 90% Of Me Is You, the insane carnival of Clarence Curvan's Calypsoul, or the potty arrangements of Checkmate's Disco Groove. Then there's the marching band cover of You Don't Love Me and the mutated Dave Brubeck arrangements of the Wadadli Experience. And as for the latin stylings of Martinique's Marius Cultier, salsa masters Los Van Van, and the soul and disco fusions of St Lucia's Magic Circle and Dominica's Ophelia well, you get the estimation. It's brilliant. We could go on. And hopefully, Strut Records will.

As the atomic number 82 singer of the Zombies, Blunstone was one of the greatest '60s john Rock vocalists, tempo the group's minor mode masterpieces with his inimitable choked and breathy vocals. After retiring from the business briefly in the previous '60s (to work in the insurance industry, of all things), he went solo in the early '70s with a string of interesting pop/rock albums that were more than of an extension of the recent Zombies profound than the more well-known work of Argent, the other Zombies spin-off dissemble. The Zombies connexion is scarce sequent; headman Zombie songwriters Rod Argent and Chris White gave Blunstone some songs, as did Argent member Russ Ballard, though Blunstone penned practically of his material himself. With their dwight Lyman Moody melodies and Baroque touches of muffled keyboards, classical guitars, and inventive string arrangements, his early-'70s albums sometimes sounded like a mellower take on the counseling the Zombies chased with their pop-psychedelic masterwork Odessey and Oracle. Blunstone managed some modest British hits with "How Could We Dare Be Wrong," "I Don't Believe in Miracles," and the Top 20 single "Say You Don't Mind," a cover of a melodic phrase written and recorded by Denny Laine after he left field the Moody Blues and before he joined Wings. Blunstone's number 1 album, One Year (1971), was his best, though the follow-ups Ennismore and Journey also had their moments.

Knight Rider's Kitt up for auction

The iconic Kitt car from the Knight Rider TV series is up for sale in an online auction.

Kitt - which stood for ‘Knight Industries Three Thousand’ - is being sold in California via online auction website, eBay. The auction ends today.

Current bidding lists the vehicle at just £20,600 at the time of writing, though the price is expected to soar in the final minutes of the auction.

The listing reads: “David Hasselhoff played Michael Knight opposite the real star, Kitt. Kitt was a 300mph, high tech, self aware communicative, man-made marvel, designed to aid and protect Michael Knight.

"Together with his human co-star, Kittfought for justice across America.”

Kitt featured a computerised voice, represented by flashing red lights, and a ‘futuristic’ interior design. It bears the number plate ‘Knight’.
